Horse Storytime Ideas
Horses at the Library
How many times per day do little girls come and ask you for horse books? Ever think you could find them in your sleep? Unfortunately, you may have noticed most of the horse picture books aren't storytime friendly. No worries, though. Check out these ideas sure to please your favorite young horse lovers.
Are You a Horse? - by Andy Rash
Boom Boom Ain't It Great to Be Crazy
Traditional Song
A horse and a flea and three blind mice
Sat on a curbstone shooting dice
The horse he slipped and fell on the flea.
"Whoops," said the flea, "There's a horse on me!"
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through,
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Way down South where bananas grow
A flea stepped on an elephant's toe
The elephant cried, with tears in his eyes,
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through,
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Way up North where there's ice and snow
There lived a penguin and his name was Joe
He got so tired of black and white
He wore pink slacks to the dance last night!
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?
Giddy and foolish the whole day through,
Boom, boom, ain't it great to be crazy?

I Know an Old Lady Who Swalled a Fly - Traditional Song Story
Ride a Cockhorse to Banbury Cross
Traditional Rhyme
Ride a cockhorse to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse.
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
And she shall have music wherever she goes.
Sally the Camel
Traditional Song
Sally the camel has five humps.
Sally the camel has five humps.
Sally the camel has five humps.
So ride, Sally, ride.
Boom, boom, boom, boom!
Sally the camel has four humps...
Sally the camel has three humps...
Sally the camel has two humps...
Sally the camel has one hump...
Sally the camel has no humps.
Sally the camel has no humps.
Sally the camel has no humps.
'Cause Sally is a horse, of course.
Also known as "Alice the Camel."
She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain
Traditional Song
She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes, (when she comes).
She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes, (when she comes).
She'll be coming 'round the mountain, she'll be coming 'round the mountain,
She'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes, (when she comes).
She'll be drivin' three white horses when she comes, (whoa back)....
She'll be wearing wool pajamas when she comes, (itch, scratch)....
We'll be havin' chicken and dumplings when she comes, (yum, yum)....
Oh we'll all come out to greet her when she comes, (howdy)....
Also see Philemon Sturges's adaptation in which the six white horses is the library bookmobile. When using Sturges's book version of the song, I paperclip a few pages together to help keep the flow in a larger group setting. Children may also be encouraged to sing out "Yee HAW" at the end of each verse.
Trot Ol' Joe - Traditional Song
Trot Ol' Joe. Trot Ol' Joe.
You ride better than any horse I know.
Trot Ol' Joe. Trot Ol' Joe.
You're the best horse in the country-o.
Whoa... Joe!
*For additional verses, make Ol' Joe run, gallop, walk, etc, or sing the song progressively quicker as in the video below.
